Along with the trend of green consumption, bioplastic compounds have been applied more and more widely in many fields such as the production of biological packaging, disposable plastic, and agricultural film,... Let’s discover interesting facts surrounding bioplastic compounds and their outstanding benefits.

Many manufacturers confuse the terms bioplastic compounds with bioplastics. In fact, bioplastics are just one of the ingredients that make up bioplastic compounds. Not only that, but the formula to create bioplastic compounds is also extremely diverse depending on the characteristics of the finished product.

1. What is bioplastic?

Bioplastics are made from plant-based materials such as corn starch, potatoes, cassava, wood chips, etc. After fermentation and synthesis, we will obtain polymer compounds with durable construction and usability similar to traditional fossil resins.

Biodegradable bioplastic

Only some plastics that are structured as polylactide acid (PLA) chains are biodegradable because PLA can be converted into H2O and CO2. In addition, some plastics that are not of plant origin, but are still biodegradable such as PBAT (Polybutylene adipate terephthalate), PCL (Polycaprolactone), PBS (Polybutylene succinate),... are also widely used.

Bioplastics are not biodegradable

Meanwhile, ethanol-structured plastics that are synthesized into ethylene/propylene will have a structure similar to fossil plastic PP, PE, ... meaning that it can decompose but cannot be bio-degradable. Although often confused, these two concepts are completely different.

2. What are bioplastic compounds?

Bioplastic compounds use biodegradable plastic as the main raw materials such as PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate), PBST (polybutylene succinate terephthalate), PLA (Polylactic acid), PBS (Polybutylene succinate), PCL ( Polycaprolactone), PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoate), TPS (Thermoplastic Starch),... combined with appropriate materials and additives to create the desired properties of the finished product.

3. Outstanding applications of bioplastic compounds

With outstanding advantages, bioplastic compounds are widely applied in many fields.

Food packaging

Food is one of the industries with the highest consumption of plastic, especially the percentage of single-use plastics. There are many solutions offered to solve the problem of plastic waste in food, but they all face many challenges because plastic packaging used in food requires not only a level of safety for users' health. , but also the technical requirements (water resistance, solvent resistance, heat resistance,...).

Bio-compound is widely applied in food packaging products such as food wraps, roll bags, and fast food bags,... The biggest advantage of this material is the moisture-retaining properties on the surface that help prevent oxygen absorption, preserving fresh fruits and vegetables for longer.

Shopping bags, industrial packaging

With the advantages of good elongation, evenly dispersed surface, and easy processing, bio-compound is also applied in the production of shopping bags, industrial bags, etc. to help the finished products have good and easy mechanical properties, decomposing after use, contributing to environmental protection.

Agricultural mulch

Not only widely used in consumer goods industries, but bio-engineered plastic is also an ideal material for agricultural films. The combination with special additives helps the finished product achieve good mechanical properties, UV resistance, anti-oxidation, and anti-fog,...

Single-use plastics

If disposable products such as spoons, forks, and straws, ... in the past still raised concerns related to environmental issues, bioplastic compounds will address the problems. The product has the potential to be completely biodegradable under normal conditions. Not only that, but the finished product of bio-compound also has high hardness, aesthetic surface, heat, and solvent resistance, making the product more attractive and easier to use.

4. Bioplastic compounds - BiONext from EuP

BiONext is our research after more than 14 years of experience in the market of raw plastics. As a great intersection between bioplastics and engineering plastic compounds, bio-compound is the ideal choice for green product lines such as food packaging, and disposable plastic,...
