A form of technical plastic called Glass Filled Nylon is made of Nylon compounds combined with glass fibers. The Nylon material's strength, stiffness, heat resistance, and dimensional stability are all enhanced by the reinforcement provided by the glass fibers. Glass reinforced Nylon or glass fiber reinforced Nylon are other names for Glass Filled Nylon.

Glass Filled Nylon's characteristics, varieties, uses, and advantages will all be covered in this article. In addition, we will launch EuroPlas PA-GF, a brand name for engineering plastic materials based on PA materials reinforced with glass fibers.

1. What is Glass Filled Nylon?

A form of technical plastic called Glass Filled Nylon is made of Nylon compounds combined with glass fibers. The Nylon material's strength, stiffness, heat resistance, and dimensional stability are all enhanced by the reinforcement provided by the glass fibers. Glass reinforced Nylon or glass fiber reinforced Nylon are other names for Glass Filled Nylon.

A class of polymers known as engineering plastics has better mechanical and thermal characteristics than regular plastics. They are used in goods for the automotive, electrical, industrial, and domestic markets that need great performance and durability.
Engineering plastics such as Nylon are formed of synthetic polymers known as polyamides. Nylon is strong, resilient to impact, abrasion, and chemicals. However, Nylon has several downsides, including a lack of rigidity, a high moisture absorption rate, poor heat resistance, and a high thermal expansion rate.

The characteristics of the material may be considerably improved by mixing glass fibers with Nylon compounds. Glass fibers act as reinforcement and slow down the movement of the polymer chains to boost the material's strength and stiffness. The glass fibers increase the material's dimensional stability and capacity to withstand heat by minimizing thermal expansion and creep deformation.

2. Glass Filled Nylon properties

Glass Filled Nylon has various properties that make it suitable for applications that require high performance and durability. Some of the main properties are:

  • High tensile strength: Glass Filled Nylon can withstand high levels of stress without breaking or deforming.
  • High rigidity: Glass Filled Nylon is very stiff and resistant to bending or flexing.
High creep resistance: Glass Filled Nylon can maintain its shape and dimensions under constant load or temperature over time.
  • High thermal stability: Glass Filled Nylon can withstand high temperatures without melting or losing its mechanical properties.
  • Low thermal expansion: Glass Filled Nylon has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which means it does not expand or contract significantly due to temperature changes.
  • Good wear resistance: Glass Filled Nylon has a low friction coefficient and can resist abrasion and erosion from contact with other surfaces.
  • Good chemical resistance: Glass Filled Nylon can resist degradation from exposure to many oils, greases, fuels, and solvents.

3. Common types of Glass Filled Nylons

There are different types of Glass Filled Nylons based on the type of Nylon compounds and the percentage of glass fiber content. Some of the common types are:

3.1. PA6 reinforced glass fiber (PA6-GF)

Glass-filled Nylon, or PA6-GF, employs PA6 (polyamide 6) as the basic compounds. Polycaprolactam (PA6) is another name for Nylon 6 or PA6. PA6-GF performs well at low temperatures and has strong toughness and impact resistance. It also has high dimensional stability and moisture absorption. Glass fiber content in PA6 GF may range from 15% to 45%, or PA6 GF 25, PA6 GF 30, or even more. Strength and rigidity increase with increasing glass fiber content, while toughness and impact resistance decrease.

3.2. PA66 reinforced glass fiber (PA66-GF)

A form of glass-filled Nylon known as PA66-GF employs polyamide 66 (PA66) as the basic compounds. Nylon 66 or polyhexamethylene adipamide are other names for PA66. Compared to PA6 GF, PA66 GF offers greater strength, stiffness, creep, and heat resistance. Additionally, it offers higher dimensional stability and a reduced moisture absorption rate. Glass fiber percentage in PA66 GF may range from 13% to 50% and can also be PA66 20 GF, PA66 30 GF, PA66 40 GF or PA66 50 GF. Strength and rigidity increase with increasing glass fiber content, while toughness and impact resistance decrease.

3.3. PA12 reinforced glass fiber (PA12-GF)

The basis compounds for PA12-GF, a form of glass-filled Nylon, is polyamide 12. Other names for PA12 include Nylon 12 and polycaprolactone. Excellent chemical resistance, minimal moisture absorption, and high dimensional stability are all characteristics of PA12-GF. Additionally, it has exceptional impact resistance, fatigue resistance, and flexibility. Different amounts of glass fiber, such as 10%, 20%, or 30%, may be found in PA12-GF. Strength and rigidity increase with increasing glass fiber content while flexibility and impact resistance decrease.
